Alrighty, folks! Week 5 (or 4 depending on how you're counting) is in the books. We had some exciting endings and some maybe unexpected outcomes.
Yes, I watched the entire OSU-ND game. It was basically the only one I could what with work and all. I suppose if I had to watch only one, that was the one! That was an old school, smashmouth football game. The Irish just plain steamrolled the OSU D in the second half. If it weren't for a couple of poor play calls during their last possession, ND wins this game. Giving the ball back to OSU, even under the direction of an inexperienced QB like McCord, with a short field and almost 2 minutes is a recipe for disappointment. Too many weapons. Double Harrison Jr all night? Egbuka will eat you up. Fabulous ending. Then I saw something from Ryan Day that I didn't think he had in him: an actual passion for Ohio State. "Ohio against the world!" is pretty much what I see and hear around here in C-bus.
I turned the channel to see a recap on B1G and got to see the last drive by Northwestern against Minnesota. What a huge win for a beleaguered program.
I also got to see Oregon just stomp Colorado in between completing orders and helping customers. The narrative of Bo Nix folding in big games still has yet to be tested this season.
Saw some of the FSU-Clemson game, too. So far not really impressed by the 'Noles. They barely beat a bad BC and then needed OT to beat a 2-2 Clemson that is clearly in trouble.
Bama impressed me. It started out looking like Ole Miss might have something for them, but the Tide made a bit of a statement there. Don't write their season off yet.
Without further rambling by me, here is Ray's Top 25:
25 (-5) Notre Dame 4-1 lost to OSU 14-17 Tough, tough loss; I truly thought they had it won when they stopped Egbuka on 4th down
24 (new) Kansas 4-0 beat BYU 38-27 Haven’t seen the Jayhawks play, They haven’t really played anyone tough yet
23 (new) Wisconsin 3-1 beat Purdue 38-17 I think if Fickell come out of this season with seven wins that’s serious positive
22 (new) Maryland 4-0 beat MSU 31-9 Still my favorite helmet design by a country mile
21 (+4) Louisville 4-0 beat BC 56-28 No transitive property in football, right? So we can’t make more of this than it is
20 (new) Kansas State 3-1 beat UCF 44-31 Only loss is to Mizzou
19 (-10) Duke 4-0 beat UConn 41-7 An early surge from a basketball school; weird
18 (-12) Rutgers 3-1 lost to UM 7-31 Just couldn’t keep up in the second half
17 (new) Ole Miss 3-1 lost to Bama 10-24 Lane Tiffin still struggling to defeat Saban. Always weird when a loss helps, but that's the system
16 (new) Oregon 4-0 Beat Colorado and Prime Time 59-32 Another one that wasn’t that close
15 (-8) Colorado 3-1 lost to Oregon by a metric crapton Not sure Colorado wins more than a few more this season
14 (+9) Texas A&M 3-1 beat Auburn 27-10 Kind of curious to see what Jimbo has going on this season
13 (-3) Florida State 4-0 beat Clemson 31-24 in OT Yet another unimpressive win for the Noles
12 (+9) Utah 4-0 beat UCLA 14-7 Another ugly game this weekend, but Utah is winning without their starting QB
11 (-7) North Carolina 4-0 beat Pitt 41-24 The Heels are starting strong again
10 (+8) Mizzou 4-0 beat Memphis 34-27 Another I haven’t see play yet
9 (+4) OSU 4-0 beat Notre Dame 17-14 You already have my take on this one
8 (new) Alabama 3-1 beat Ole Miss 24-10 A solid second half for the Tide sealed this one; big jump!
7 (-4) Oklahoma 4-0 beat Cincinnati 20-6 Sooners failed to score 60 points; maybe they were sick?
6 (+9) Penn State 4-0 beat Iowa 31-0 First time the Hawkeyes have been shutout since like forever ago
5 (+6) Washington State 4-0 beat Oregon State 38-35 Big, ridiculous move in my rankings for this win
4 (+1) Miami (FL) 4-0 beat Temple 41-7 The Owls are not exactly a test
3 (-1) Washington 4-0 beat Cal 59-32 And it wasn’t that close
2 (+10) Michigan 4-0 beat Rutgers 31-7 It was close in the 1st half, but
1 ( / ) Texas 4-0 beat Baylor 38-6 Baylor seems not so impressive lately
